One list of topics, real 404s and fewer rough edges

A fresh look at every journey found broken links, pages written only for Washington and small things that did not add up. This release fixes them.

We walked every journey on a phone and a laptop, in several states, and fixed what we found.

  • Answers never show “[blocked]”. A link in an answer that goes nowhere now reads as plain words.
  • Pages that do not exist say so with a real “Page not found”, worded for every state, instead of sending you to Washington.
  • State programs that come with a written answer get their own heading, so they never sit under “Federal programs”. When an answer asks for your ZIP code, a box for it shows right under the answer.
  • One list of topics everywhere: Food, Housing, Health, Money, Care, Education, Work, Legal help and Safety, on the home page, every state page, the menu and the footer. Goods and Transit stay hidden until a state lists programs for them.
  • “Which Washington County?” now lists the biggest ones first, up to eight, and says to type the state if yours is not there.
  • If you write in Spanish, the first line and “Where are you?” answer in Spanish, and “comida en Miami” finds Miami.
  • Our coverage shows the date in a US time zone, a level that matches the numbers on the page, and local nonprofits for each state.
  • About, How it works and Privacy now read for every state. Washington’s hotline and health data law are named as Washington’s.
  • Each program card has one button, Start my application, with the agency’s site, phone and Save as links.
  • Phones for 56 state agencies, each read on the agency’s own site, and right labels and lines on Ohio and Texas cards.
  • In states with their own health marketplace, like New York, California and Washington, the 60-day coverage date links that marketplace.
  • The domestic violence hotline can be texted: Text START to 88788.
  • On the demo site, Maria’s newest letter is her renewal notice, and the front page no longer shows an error after you start.
  • Every page has its own title, private pages stay out of search, and the state map is easier to use on a phone.
