Help after a death, not the crisis lines

Someone who writes that a husband, parent or child died now gets help with survivor benefits and the funeral, not the crisis card.

When someone wrote “I need help after my husband died”, Front Door showed the crisis lines first and put the domestic violence hotline at the top. One answer even asked if they were safe at home. That was wrong. A death in the family needs practical help.

Now a question about a death, a funeral or survivor benefits gets the help it asks for: Social Security survivor benefits, help paying for a funeral or burial, and the state’s programs for the income the family lost. This works in English and Spanish, such as “mi esposo murió” and “falleció mi mamá”.

The crisis lines still come first whenever the words say someone wants to hurt themselves or someone is hurting or threatening them, even in the same message as a death. A husband or partner named alone no longer counts as a sign of abuse; words like “my husband scares me” still do.
