Life events: start from what just happened

People rarely come looking for a program by name. They come because something happened: they lost a job, a baby is coming, a fire took the house. Each of those has a short list of things to do and a few dates that are easy to miss.

Life events start there. Pick what happened from eleven choices and the page shows what to do first, the dates that matter, your state’s own programs, federal help, and offices near you.

  • Eleven events: lost a job, having a baby, a fire, flood or storm, a new diagnosis or disability, someone died, divorce or separation, leaving the military, turning 65, getting out of jail or prison, facing eviction or losing housing, and not safe at home.
  • Dates that matter, each linked to the official page that sets it: 60 days to pick a Marketplace plan after losing coverage or having a baby, at least 60 days to choose COBRA, 60 days to apply with FEMA, and the 7-month Medicare sign-up window.
  • Your state’s programs under their own names, from the same research as the state pages. Nothing is made up: if a state has no program for something, the page says to call 211.
  • Offices near you: type a ZIP code or county to see county and state offices, with tap to call and directions.
  • Talk it through opens the conversation with what happened. The first answer already knows the event and its dates, then shows the programs, then asks a question to narrow it down.
  • Not safe at home puts the National Domestic Violence Hotline and 911 first, and the address of the page does not say what is going on.
  • Where to find them: “Something changed?” on the front page and every state page, and Life events in the Menu and footer. The front page still never guesses your state: its links ask which state you are in.
